Thank you, Ms. Yangsook Choi!

Last Thursday, all of elementary was treated to time with our special guest author and illustrator Ms. Yangsook Choi!

PK and Kindergarten enjoyed the first session.  Ms Choi read her story New Cat.  Then she taught the students how to draw a cat step by step using just letters of the alphabet.

Grade 4 and 5 enjoyed the second session.  Ms Choi shared the creative process of how she made her very well known book The Name Jar.  She encouraged us to "write about what you love and really care for!"

Grade 1 participated in the Young Artists workshop and created storyboards experiencing first hand how we can use pictures to tell stories. Ms. Choi shared how "seeing students' creativity is the best part about visiting schools!"

The final session of the day was with Grade 2 and 3.  They too enjoyed The Name Jar presentation.  Ms. Choi stressed the power of imagination, gathering ideas, researching, writing, editing, and illustrating.  She challenged everyone to "see themselves as a great character who makes good choices!"

Ms Choi's day ended with several one-on-one sessions in the library with students eager to talk about their writing and their art.

Thank you, Ms. Yangsook Choi for spending the day with us and sharing your passion for writing and illustrating.  We have been inspired!

A Boy and a Jaguar by Alan Rabinowitz

The fourth picture book being considered for the Morning Calm Medal this year is
Alan Rabiniwitz's A Boy and a Jaguar!

"Alan loves animals, but the great cat house at the Bronx Zoo makes him sad. Why are they all alone in empty cages? Are they being punished? More than anything, he wants to be their champion—their voice—but he stutters uncontrollably.  Except when he talks to animals…Then he is fluent.

Follow the life of the man Time Magazine calls, "the Indiana Jones of wildlife conservation" as he searches for his voice and fulfills a promise to speak for animals, and people, who cannot speak for themselves. This real-life story with tender illustrations by Catia Chien explores truths not defined by the spoken word." - Amazon review
